About

DRAGONBIRD-2-1.jpg

DragonBird Theatre is an early years theatre production company based in Bristol, UK.

We have been running early years theatre and play sessions for little ones and their grown ups in Bristol and the South West for almost ten years.

We use vibrant sets, props and performance styles like puppetry to tell exciting stories to children aged five and under. Our performances are all about engaging imaginations and encouraging a love of theatre in the very young.

All of our shows include a theatreplay adventure that goes wherever our story has taken us. We sing songs, dance, blow bubbles and play with giant nets, parachutes, and play-safe scrap materials. Our play sessions facilitate active, creative play between parents/guardians and their children.

We use theatrical and educational methodologies to develop enriching and educational shows. Our techniques focus on boosting motor and language skills, imagination and emotional growth.

Most importantly, our early years theatre shows help communities play together.

Many years ago Lotte and I had a chance meeting at a Bristol theatre in 2012 and by the end of the interval we decided we wanted to work together.  At that point I had never hard of early years theatre, but over the years I have fallen in love with the enchanting, challenging and forever fulfilling genre.

Before starting DragonBird Theatre my CV spun two decades of an eclectic dolly mixture of jobs. I’ve worked as a drama teacher, workshop facilitator, theatre and film performer, events organiser, script writer, and even a private chef! I also co-founded a theatre company in Buenos Aires.

As well as my responsibilities for DragonBird, I still love my role as the movement choreographer for Zone Club, an arts project for learning disabled young adults at The Wiltshire Music Centre, which myself and a group of artists deliver once a month.

Tilly and I created DragonBird Theatre at a time when I was immersed in a world of young children, with two boys of my own. Now my children are older, I love being able to carry on playing with young children and families with DragonBird.

After growing up in both Denmark and Cornwall, I went on to complete BA in Theatre at Dartington College of Arts.  I have since worked in TV, film and radio, on set and in production and have toured with several theatre companies. An eight month theatre in education tour inspired me to study for a PGCE, going on to teach BTEC theatre at the City of Bristol College for eight years.

I love performing but I also really enjoy making the props for DragonBird, turning our big ideas into something hold-able and tactile. I love seeing the children at our shows use the props to delve further into their imaginations.
